| Comments: | Hi Durk! I was born in 1992 so I didnt hear him but my drum teacher told me to go to a website called Drummerworld and I downloaded the Toto song, Rosanna. On that website he explains how you play the Rosanna shuffle he plays in the song(if you listen u can hear it is a very hard one to play!). Its a very cool rythme. I am not a very good player but when I get better I really want to play the Rosanna shuffle, but still, it's too hard for me. I wish I had seen him play. What a shame he died! | Comments: | As a drummer JP helped me understand that "less is better." His touch and feel set him apart as one of the truly gifted drummers of our time. His work on "Silk Degrees" is one of his best. I should have to pay a royalty for all the chops I stole from. I met Brian Duncan, a christian artist who had worked with JP a few years ago and I remarked about JP's playing on his Brian's album "Lunatic Friend," his comment to me was, "great loss for us all." Thank God for his large catalog of work and his ability and skill with so many types and styles of music. He will remain an inspiration to me for as long as I play! Please, let me tell you I'm drumming since I was 14 years old (I'm 46); I've covered Rossana, Hold the Line and Africa (incredible grooves!) in some bands. Jeff set the drumming standard for all of us; the drums for me never were the same since I heard the Jeff's marvelous and deep pocket in Toto, Steely Dan, Bozz Scags and so... Wow! | Comments: | Great to see a site dedicated to Jeff... I don't play as much as I used to but Jeff was probably my biggest influence, and not just on grooves. His attitude to other people and work was one that a lot of people could learn from. I used to run a drum store in London and I was forever meeting talented players, some absolutely incredible, but I was disappointed with the attitude that some of these guys had, like they'd practiced hard and somehow they were now due a living. I used to try to turn them on to Jeff to see if they'd get the picture (they needed a slap upside the head but that often offends... ;-)) I eventually wrote an article for UK Drummer's magazine "Rhythm" which was published in August 97 to mark the 5th anniversary of his passing. I'm no writer, but I really wanted to do something to make sure drummers, new and old, would remember him or check his chops out for the first time (the article was called "Halleluiah Man" after the track he played on with Love & Money |

| Comments: | Even in the small towns in Germany we know of Jeff. And I have to say that I'm most lucky for my first drumteacher being a Porcaro and Toto fan. Thought I was playing his hand and foot technique it took me some years to find out about Jeff and to understand the genius in his playing and his approach (when you're young, you know). But if you asked me today what's most important about playing the drums in a band and who my favourite drummer is I'd tell you to go and listen to just one tune Jeff played on. And if you really listen you will understand. Won't even try and start to make list of good songs cause I wouldn't be able to stop writing. All the best to everyone who keeps the memory of Jeff alive. | Comments: | January 09,2005 I've listened to Jeff Porcaro for many years. I am still amazed at how many recordings I hear that turn out to be him playing the drums. I'll be 50 in March and that said it means he was recording with major stars when I was out of high school and he was still high school age. Kind of humbles a person and brings to the forefront just how good Mr. Porcaro was. Smooth, very smooth. One can almost always tell when it is Jeff playing. That style of his was unmistakable, and that sound! The sound of his toms. Sometimes I wonder if DW didn't pattern their tom sound,(timbre), after Jeff's tom sound. Too bad they can't sell you his groove as well. Incredible musician, One of my favorites always. |

| Comments: | Great site for a great drummer! Jeff is one of my favorites - the other one is Buddy Rich. For pop and rock, Jeff was the cat - just take a look at all the sessions he did. One of my favorite records from the '70's was Boz Scaggs - Silk Degrees. I was in 6th grade. I wore that record out. When all those cats from the Boz band became Toto, I flipped out and became an instant Toto fan. I didn't realize he played on so many other records until a few years later. I was fortunate enough to be able to see Jeff play live several times at the Baked Potato and met him in 1990 at a Toto rehearsal in North Hollywood. Even now, I'm on the lookout for records with Jeff - I keep a list of his session tracks handy - I recommend doing the same. He played beautifully on everything! |

| Comments: | Jeff Porcaro is for me the greatest drummer ever, I think that mostly for his approach on creating rhythms... grooves...excellent taste... I have over 100 adjectives to write in that regard. It was always easy to knwow when Jeff recorded drums in a track (when he was sessioning), the touch, the groove, the sound and the way the rhythm moved and flowed even though it was pop or just a very simple rhythm, he would play it differently. Even though I'm not a drummer (I'm composer.. I play guitar and keyboards) I have his instructional video and I think when I'm producing or arranging drums for a song I tried to approach drums as "maybe" Jeff would have approached that song or that part of the song I'm working with, in other words, he has influenced the way I perceive what a drummer should be or do or approach his contribution to music -- I feel a great respect and admiration for this musician -- I'll say it again, I think he was and will be the greatest drummer of all times... | Comments: | not everyone knows jeff was one of the greatest drummers of all time. when PEOPLE talk about drummers you hear names like; neil peart, john bonham.BUT, when DRUMMERS talk about drummers you hear names like jeff porcaro, steve gadd, buddy rich, max roach, and elvin jones. jeff had a magical ability to create a perfect groove for a song. a friend of mine once said "if you took one song and had 10 drummers play it you would have 10 different grooves. But, if you wanted to know what groove the song was SUPOSE to have you would listen to the groove jeff porcaro made." enough said. great web site. im gladd to see this many fans thanks! |
